About Skin Care

Your risk of developing bedsores is higher if you have difficulty moving and can't change position easily while seated or in bed.

Also called pressure ulcers and decubitus ulcers — bedsores are injuries to the skin and underlying tissue resulting from prolonged pressure from an outside contact.

Bedsores develop most often on skin that covers the body’s bony areas such as the tailbone, heels, ankles and hips.

Those most at risk generally have medical conditions that make changing their body positions difficult or that spend extended periods of time in a chair or bed.

Bedsores can develop over hours or days. Most sores heal with treatment, but some never heal completely.

A specific bedsores may fall into one of several stages based on their depth and severity. Skin and tissue damage ranges from red, unbroken skin to a deep injury involving muscle and bone.

We advise patients to seek immediate medical advice at the first signs of a bedsore infection such as drainage, a foul smell or increased redness and swelling around the area.
